Irastorza: “The future of Zelensky in Ukraine is at stake, Russia will not negotiate with him”

Eduardo Irastorza, Professor Obsass School, talks about the statements of Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, who questioned the legitimacy of Volodymyr Zelensky to sign peace agreements in Ukraine, suggesting that Russia does not want to negotiate with the current Ukrainian president due to his intransigent position on territorial integrity. According to Irastorza, the situation in Ukraine is marked by the lack of legitimacy of Zelensky, who, although he leads in times of war, could have difficulty negotiating in peacetime. And, he emphasizes that “Zelensky's future in Ukraine is at stake, Russia will not negotiate with him.”

As for the exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia, Irastorza does not consider it a significant advance towards peace, since this type of exchanges are common in military conflicts. In his opinion, the real challenge lies in the consequences of these exchanges, since the released prisoners could return to the battle lines. The recent escalation of attacks, including the Ukrainian offensive with drones about Moscow, is an indication that negotiations, although they continue, do not avoid land violence.

Irastorza also comments on Russia's military tactics, particularly that of “triple strangulation”, which aims to wear the Ukrainian army through small attacks on multiple fronts, weakening its resources and increasing the number of casualties. It maintains that this strategy is more effective than direct direct offensives, and puts Ukraine in a critical situation due to its military exhaustion.
